With 1938+2023, MOPO has created a “‘relaxed' dialogue between the 1938 house and its 2023 additions, an architecture that allows for ambiguity between old and new. This historical fuzziness produces something that is clearly contemporary, but not solely a product of its time", according to Amandine Kastler and Erlend Skjeseth. Oslo is surrounded by a carpet of wooden single-family homes, many of them designed by architects throughout the twentieth century. As the Norwegian capital has grown and housing prices have risen, the pressure to densify these areas has increased. To manage densification, the municipality of Oslo developed the "småhusplanen" – a general regulation plan for detached houses – restricting the degree of utilization and heights to adapt to the existing fabric. Bergslia, by MOPO partners Siri Moseng and Kaja Bergliot Poulsen, is a project that has innovatively navigated the zoning regulations. The project won the Oslo Architects’ Association’s prize in 2023. This volume of asBuilt presents the full set of drawings for 1938+2023, and photo-documentations by Einar Aslaksen and Niklas Hart.
