In the nineteenth century, scientists thought that the North Pole was ice-free and that ice came from rivers. This book, published in 1818, defends the inaccurate climate theory resulting from these misconceptions and links the harsh European winters of 1815–17 to the break-up and southward drift of Arctic ice.
