The book aims to bridge the growing gap between students' experience of texts and a body of sophisticated theory. Together with its companion volume, Teaching Suggestions, it focuses on such issues in contemporary theory as interpretive constraints, race and gender, intertextuality, narrative aspects of history, and the question of value.
