Bound by exile and shared trauma, a Palestinian Muslim and a Lebanese Christian become brothers not by blood, but by the lives they have endured. Beginning in Gaza in 1975 and spanning five decades across Gaza, Egypt, London, Gatwick, Horley, and beyond, Charbel's Guesthouse follows Jamal Al-Saadi, a Palestinian engineer whose life is shaped by occupation, imprisonment, exile, and the search for belonging. As he rebuilds his life in Britain, an unexpected friendship with Charbel, a Lebanese Christian, and Charbel's mother Mariam challenges inherited divisions and offers the possibility of redemption. Yet the past refuses to loosen its grip, and Jamal ultimately finds himself imprisoned once more, confronting whether freedom is ever truly possible. Exploring diaspora, identity, trauma, belonging, faith, and love, the novel examines how political violence shapes ordinary lives without reducing its characters to symbols. It is ultimately a story about the fragile possibility of human connection across religious, national, and historical divides.
