William Ashton Ellis (1852–1919) abandoned his medical career in order to devote himself to his Wagner studies. In this 1899 translation of Wagner's letters, the majority are those written to Otto Wesendonck, the retired silk merchant and patron of the arts who provided Wagner with generous financial support.
