In 1855, Bernard Whittingham (fl.1850) volunteered to join H.M.S. Sibylle 'to discover the progress of Russian aggrandisement in North-eastern Asia'. His notes, published in 1856, give an account of an understudied time and place - the Pacific theatre of the Crimean War - with far-reaching influence on later events.
