After serving a nineteen-year sentence for stealing bread to feed his family, Jean Valjean is freed from prison. He must rebuild his life as an ex-convict in a deeply unequal society, whilst becoming a protector to a young woman, Fantine, and her daughter. Les Misérables is an epic tale of community and compassion in the face of injustice, embodying the revolutionary spirit that is synonymous with French history. It has had numerous contemporary adaptations, including one of the longest-running musicals on London's West End.
