This encyclopedia of the occult sciences, reissued here in its 1845 edition, was extraordinarily popular in nineteenth-century France. It lists superstitions and 'infernal beings, persons, books, facts, and things' ranging from Russia to the indigenous cultures of the Andes, and claims thereby to help refute error and banish superstition.
