Fjodor grows up in Aabothnes. Most of the time the farm lies in the shade. Father works on a locomotive in the barn. Mother is Russian, and she walks around longing for something. Little brother is deaf, but he has a magical way with birds. This is a realistic and transgressive book, dark and bright, from Norway, but strangely un-Norwegian.
