Sir John Evans (1823–1908), a keen amateur of geology, extended his interests to the artefacts found in gravel beds, leading to this 1872 work. Heavily illustrated, it describes implements from the Stone Age, including weapons, tools and ornaments, from cave and river-bed deposits as well as settlement sites.
