This book springs from a unique collection that opens the door to stories about art, community, conflicts, and ruptures during the period that gave rise to the Nordic region as we know it today. In 2026, the full resources of Kunstsilo’s considerable facilities will be brought to bear when the Tangen Collection, the world’s largest collection of Nordic Modernism, is presented through three large-scale exhibitions. For the first time, important works acquired from the Canica Art Collection will also be on displafor the Norwegian public. The collections were created through a close-knit collaboration with Steinar Gjessing, art adviser for both Nicolai Tangen and Stein Erik Hagen. Through the acquisition, the Tangen Collection has been enriched by key art-historical works from the period 1910–1970. The Tangen Collection’s broad representation of artists gives it a unique position, as an unparalleled source of insight into more than half a century of Nordic art.
