This astonishing 1844 publication by the Prussian schoolmaster Hermann Grassmann (1809–77) was not understood by the mathematicians of his day, and was ignored for many years. However, it anticipated twentieth-century developments such as vector spaces, dimension, and exterior products, and is now regarded as a foundational work.
