Omtale

This volume of primary sources examines the whole range of hostile feeling to which nineteenth century settlers found themselves subjected against the background of racial ideology and stereotyping, found in a variety of publications. It explores the ways in which the government excluded and persecuted foreigners including legislation, incarceration and deportation. It further outlines the existence of xenophobic organizations through newspaper articles and official reports of riots which took place against immigrants throughout the period and also demonstrates the normality of racial violence which impacted upon all migrant groups. Accompanied by introductions and annotations written by the editor, this volume will be of great interest to students of British and World History.
