Advancing essentially a political view as to why planners plan as they do, Planners, Politics and Health Services (originally published in 1980) discusses the consequences within the context of health services planning. It questions the influences which determine planning and the planning strategies adopted as a result. The book argues that social organisation, which is based upon economic factors, is the major influence of the link between the planner’s political thinking and his work. The function of planning as a state activity within a capitalist society is discussed and the role of the planner is reviewed critically regarding these political and economic arguments. Drawing on two case studies, planning work is seen to aid the administrative and legitimatory processes of capitalist society. Examining a wide range of issues related to planning work and incorporating an introspective analysis, this work will be of value to all those involved in the politics and planning of health services.
