Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, and many other American leaders, opposed communism because of its hostility to religion. American Protestant churches were divided, and so American political leaders constructed a new civil religion to mobilize domestic support, determine the boundaries of containment, unite people against communism, and undermine communist governments abroad.
