Arthur Evans became Britain's leading Balkan expert after publishing his 1876 account of travelling through Bosnia. He returned in 1877 as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian. Published in 1878, these reports offer historical, social and religious background to the Balkan insurrection, and also a valuable insight into the genesis of more recent conflicts.
