MIND THE GAP er en kombinert tekst- og oppgavebok for engelsk grunnkurs i allmennfaglig studieretning. Verket består av seks kapitler: - Foundations - Focus on the USA - Focus on the UK - English in the World - Norway - Miscellaneous Texts - Language exercises MIND THE GAP dekker læreplanmålene på en strukturert og oversiktlig måte. I bokens innledningskapittel, Foundations, legges grunnlaget for det videre arbeidet med de ulike emnene i læreplanen. Kapitlet Miscellaneous Texts inneholder en rekke sakprosatekster og skjønnlitterære tekster som utdyper og supplerer de øvrige kapitlene. Det er oppgaver som er knyttet til den enkelte teksten, og man finner tilleggsoppgaver i Language Exercises. Dette byr på fleksibilitet og mulighet for differensiering. I tillegg finnes det henvisninger til gode internettadresser. Forfatteren Desmond McGarrighan har undervist 15 år i ungdomsskolen og 10 år i den videregående skolen. Mind the Gap is a text- and excercise book for the English foundation course in Norway's upper secondary school and has been designed to cover the curriculum in a way that combines clarity and flexibility. The texts have been chosen in order to provide good linguistic models for learners, as well as giving reading enjoyment and information. Most of the texts have their own comprehension questions, but the vast majority of language exercises are to be found in the final chapter. In this way individual pupils can work with language tasks that match their specific needs independently of the text-reading. Mind the Gap aims to take pupils through the foundation course in a way that both prerpares them for the examination and inspires them to continue to learn and use English after the end of the year. The author Desmond McGarrighan was born in Haslingden, England in 1950. He took a degree in Scandinavian Studies at the University of London and studied English at the University of Bergen. He spent the first fifteen years of his teaching career in lower secondary school, and since 1989 he has taught English at Bergen Katedralskole.
