Comparative psychology and animal welfare are often thought of, and taught, as separate entities, yet, as this volume shows, the two disciplines are profoundly interconnected. For psychologists, animal welfare should not only be considered when applying for ethical approval. For welfare scientists, psychological principles may be applied in assessing welfare, understanding the risk factors for reduced welfare, and exploring sentience and how it relates to welfare. This volume explores the welfare of animals used in comparative psychology studies. We consider how poor – or good! – welfare, and the way subjects perceive the world, can impact research outcomes. Chapters are dedicated to different groups of animals, from primates to invertebrates, with each exploring a “hot topic” in the interplay of comparative psychology and animal welfare. The book is intended for an academic audience, from undergraduates up to Professors in Psychology, Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Anthropology, and related subjects.
