The Railway Children is E. Nesbit's most universally loved novel. It follows three young children – Roberta, Peter and Phyllis – whose happy, comfortable lives with their parents are upturned when their father, a high-ranking bureaucrat, suddenly disappears overnight. The children are forced to move to a house near a railway station with their mother, a hardworking writer who must now find a way to support her family.
