The learned, pioneering, but controversial German biblical scholar Constantin von Tischendorf (1815–74) published the first edition of this book in 1865; this 1868 translation is of the expanded 1866 fourth edition. Tischendorf here argues, highly polemically, that the gospel texts were established by the end of the first century.
