Eliot's most acclaimed novel, Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life was published in a series of eight volumes in 1871-2. Set in a fictional small town in the Midlands, England, the novel follows the lives of several of its residents during the politically turbulent period of 1829-32. As their paths intersect, complex issues pertaining to religion, education, women's rights and marriage are brought into focus. The book is widely regarded as one of the greatest English novels ever written.
