Helen of Troy, 1993

Omtale

Who better to take us back to 1990s Tennessee than... Helen of Troy? In Maria Zoccola's debut poetry collection, we get all the spit, the gum, the babies, the sheer boredom of being a housewife. Set in the real town of Sparta, this Helen is a voice with no holds barred, terminally fed up with her husband Menelaus and ever ready to commiserate and plot with her sister Cly (Clytemnestra). Through sequences of formally dazzling, linguistically brilliant poems, with interjections from minor characters, in Greek chorus-fashion, we piece together the whole, legendary story, now in the particular light of the pre-millennial American south.
