Imagined childhoods : self and society in autobiographical accounts

The difference between the self who writes and the self who was is greatest when people narrate their childhood experiences. In a certain sense, therefore, childhood recollections are "imagined childhoods". Such memories call into question our notions of fact and fiction, requiring us to open up the notion of truth.
